Small Business Website Design

Case Study: Bridie Nelson

Bridie Nelson specialises in coach mentoring and wanted a logo and website to enhance her online presence. Her target audience is individuals facing a health or life crisis. These individuals often feel as though their life has reached a "crisis point" and are desperate for a change. Bridie tackles this by helping them in terms of career development, stress management and work / life balance (amongst other areas).

Initially, Bridie seemed slightly wary of hiring a website designer incase she ended up with a product that did not meet her needs or appeal to her target audience in the way that she intended.

To reassure Bridie that working with Freshbeat would be a step in the right direction, several emails were exchanged prior to the project commencing. This allowed an in-depth discussion of what she needed from the project and what message the design of the website should give its viewers. This was achieved simply by analysing other websites (layout, colour, typography, imagery etc.) and discussing how similar techniques could be incorporated into the project. It was then agreed that the design of the website should be 'elegant, natural and fresh'. This would fit in perfectly to appeal to Bridie's prospective clients.

iStockphotoTo further develop an idea of the websites possible appearance, Bridie was shown a selection of photos from iStock that could possibly be incorporated into the designs. One might think that the best choice of photos would be those that show happy, everyday people living their lives normally. However this turned out looking quite unrealistic and from Bridie's feedback on the images, it was evident that a different approach to image selection needed to be undertaken.

"What I need to get across is the image of somewhere closer to the person they want to be; waking up each morning feeling great, happy and carefree, free from constraints they are under, the constant pressures of a deadly boring life. I want them to really feel that it is possible to be excited and joyful about the day ahead of them. I want them to get passionate about making changes to their daily lives, so that Mondays start to feel as good as Fridays."

Further discussion of image use resulted in a much more appropriate selection of photos to use in the designs. These choices fitted in perfectly with the message that Bridie wanted the website's appearance to communicate. Now that the photos were sorted, it was time to see some designs.

Bridie was presented with 3 ideas for a logo, after requesting some colour changes to one of them she was happy to use the logo you can see below. The idea for this version of the logo was to focus on the concept of development, or 'growth'.

A design for the homepage was then presented online and Bridie gave her thoughts on it by stating which parts she liked and which parts she would prefer to change. The design was revised twice until Bridie was perfectly happy with it's appearance. The next step was to produce a design for one sub-page together with the design for the contact page. Once Bridie was happy with the use of images and the general layout of each page, it was time to build the designs into a fully functioning website with the content provided by Bridie.

Eager to get my new coach-mentoring practice off to a flying start, I needed a smart website which would appeal to the clients I wanted to attract. Unfortunately, I had no idea who to approach and to be honest, I was wary of being bamboozled with technotalk!

It was quite by chance that I stumbled across Freshbeat, but I knew as soon as I had the ‘almost immediate’ response from Matt Pealing that I had made the right choice. Matt is very thorough, he approaches everything in a calm, confident and professional manner and above all he explains in just enough detail to provide clarity without confusion.

In total, the build took just over one month from start to finish and this included the creation of my logo – which was way ahead of the estimated lead time. Matt intuitively knew how to pull everything together into a visual form which pressed all the right buttons for me and I am so very pleased with the finished website.

The cost is affordable for a new start up like myself, there are no hidden extras and I would have no hesitation in recommending Freshbeat to others.
